Good design is good business

Don’t just take our word for it.

In 2005 a group called The Design Council studied the portfolios of 63 companies that traded on the Financial Times Stock Exchange (FTSE) over a decade. What they discovered was that the companies that were design conscious did much, much better than those that weren’t – in fact, they outperformed the FTSE 100 index by 200%.

If you look at the graph below you can see how much better these design-aware businesses (red line) did compared to the top 100 businesses on the FTSE who didn’t place a strong emphasis on business/product design (blue line).

Steven Bradley, the author of Design Fundamentals, notes that people are inherently biased towards beauty:

Human beings have an attractiveness bias; we perceive beautiful things as being better, regardless of whether they actually are better. All else being equal, we prefer beautiful things, and we believe beautiful things function better. As in nature, function can follow form.

Good brand and product design stimulates and motivates consumers to purchase. As consumers we trust it and rely on it, whether it’s a web page’s design, or the shape of a gym bottle; the logo and collateral for a finance company or the branding for a nursing home. Look at any good business and you will see good design.
